A 3rd party road test is the official Texas Class C non-commercial driving skills examination conducted by a school authorized under the Texas DPS Third Party Skills Testing program instead of a DPS office. The test measures four key driving skills, commonly known as the COPS framework.
Control
Control measures the applicant’s ability to steer, accelerate, brake, and operate the vehicle smoothly.
Observation
Observation measures mirror use, blind-spot checks, intersection scanning, pedestrian awareness, and recognition of potential hazards.
Position
Position measures lane placement, stopping position, turning position, following distance, and the vehicle’s relationship to other traffic.
Signal
Signal measures whether the applicant communicates correctly before turns, lane changes, and other movements.
The examiner is not looking for perfect driving. The applicant must demonstrate safe, legal, and independent operation without creating a situation that requires examiner intervention.
Choose Your Road Test Service
Best Driving School offers two road-test service options so applicants can choose the level of support that matches their readiness.
Applicants must also meet current Texas driver license application requirements before their scheduled exam.

Bring original, valid documents whenever required and printed copies where the school requests them.
Documents for Teen Applicants

What Happens After You Pass the Third Party Road Test?
The Examiner Finalizes the Test Result
After the test, the examiner records the result and prepares the required documentation. If a sealed paper envelope is issued, the applicant must not open it.
The Test Packet Is Submitted
If the application is eligible, the school may submit the packet through the DPS TPST Submission Portal. Otherwise, the applicant may need to bring the sealed packet to a DPS office.
DPS Reviews the Application
DPS reviews the submitted test result and licensing documents. Processing time varies and cannot be guaranteed or expedited by Best Driving School.
The Applicant Completes the Licensing Transaction
If DPS approves an online submission, the applicant receives instructions for completing the licensing transaction and paying the required state fee online.
A Temporary License Is Issued
After the approved licensing transaction is completed, an eligible applicant can print or receive a temporary paper license allowing legal driving.
The Permanent Card Arrives by Mail
DPS mails the permanent plastic driver license to the approved address. Mailing and processing times are controlled entirely by DPS.
Why Students in Plano Choose a 3rd Party Road Test
A third party road test gives applicants a direct alternative to scheduling their skills test through a DPS driver license office.
Schedule Directly With the Driving School
DPS office appointments can be limited, and the preferred location or date may not be available. A DPS-authorized school allows eligible students to arrange the driving test directly with the testing provider.
Test in a Familiar Local Environment
Testing at a local driving school can feel less overwhelming than arriving at a busy government office. The road test is still an official examination — the benefit is a more familiar setting, not an easier scoring standard.
Avoid a Separate DPS Road Test Appointment
A TPST applicant completes the driving test at the authorized school rather than at a DPS office, and may complete licensing online without a separate visit if the packet is submitted and approved.
Receive the Same Official License
A person who passes through a DPS-authorized TPST provider receives the same type of Texas driver license as an applicant who passes at a DPS office.
